Passport photo size requirements

A smaller file is not a compliant passport photo

Background colour, expression, and printed dimensions are separate from KB. This tool only changes the digital file. If you need a studio print, ask the studio to follow the official photo guide.

Passport photograph rules cover background, pose, and sometimes digital file size. Studio print sizes are not always the same as the online upload. Follow the instructions for the service you are using.

PixelThinks cannot guarantee that a government portal will accept the file.

How to use

  1. Upload a photograph that already follows the pose and background notes as closely as you can.
  2. Enter the file-size or pixel limit from the current Passport Seva instructions.
  3. Compress or resize and check the face, including glasses and hairline if relevant.
  4. Download the file and keep the original.

Common problems

The Passport Seva upload fails

Check bytes and format on the downloaded file. A print-ready TIFF or a huge camera JPEG often needs compression even when the pose is correct.

The photo is too large

Set Target size to the maximum in the instructions. Keep dimensions if the instructions also name a pixel size.

The face looks soft

Do not stack compression. Start from the original, use a moderate quality, and stop when the file is under the cap.

Wrong format

Export JPEG if that is what the portal names. Do not upload a PDF of the photo unless the instructions say so.

The image is distorted

Passport photos are usually a fixed ratio. Crop to that ratio, then resize. Avoid stretch.

Below a minimum size

If a minimum KB is listed, over-compression can fail. Raise quality until you are inside the window.

Frequently asked questions

Can I compress a passport photo here?

You can reduce a digital photograph’s file size. PixelThinks does not certify passport photo compliance and does not replace a studio when a printed photo is required.

Do you upload my passport photograph?

No. Processing runs in your browser when supported.

Can I change pixels and file size?

Yes, if the instructions list both. Check the download for each requirement.

Can I use this on a phone?

Yes. Submit the file only on Passport Seva or the official channel you were given.

Will compression make the photo fail?

It can, if the face blurs or the file drops below a minimum size. Compare the preview with the original.

Is the passport photo compressor free?

Yes. No signup and no daily cap. One image at a time, up to 30MB.

Compress to a specific file size

Every preset starts with its stated KB limit. You can adjust that limit in the tool.
