How government photo requirements work
One tool, many forms
Recruitment, scholarships, licences, and certificates all reuse the same idea: a small JPEG of a face. The numbers differ. This page is a general compressor with that use in mind, not a substitute for any department’s helpdesk.
Each department publishes its own photo rules. There is no single government-wide size. Copy the numbers from the form or PDF you are using right now.
PixelThinks cannot guarantee that a government portal will accept the file.
How to use
- Enter the maximum KB (or a min–max range) from your application form.
- Upload your photograph.
- Compress Photo and check the result against the limit you entered.
- Download the photo and keep the original.
Common problems
The photo is too large for the portal
Enter the form’s maximum KB, then compress. JPEG is usually smaller than PNG for photographs. Crop unused background first if the face is a small part of the frame.
Dimensions are correct but the file is still over the limit
Pixel count and file size are separate. Keep your dimensions if the form requires them, and set the KB maximum so the compressor lowers quality before shrinking the image further.
The image looks distorted
Crop to the sample ratio on the form. Do not stretch.
Wrong format
Export the type the form lists under Advanced settings. A screenshot PNG will not pass a JPG-only field until you convert it.
The portal rejects the image
Re-read the form’s photo help text. Rejection may be size, type, or a quality rule this tool cannot see. Matching the KB you typed does not guarantee portal acceptance.
The file is smaller than the minimum
If the form names a range such as 20–50 KB, switch to Size range and set both values. This tool aims under the maximum and will not pad a file to inflate it. Raise quality in Advanced settings only when no KB target is set, or start from a larger original crop.
Frequently asked questions
Can I compress a photo for any government form?
You can compress a photograph file and aim at the KB or pixel limit printed on that form. PixelThinks cannot guarantee any portal will accept the result.
Do you upload my photograph?
No. Images are processed locally in your browser whenever supported. Your photo is not uploaded to our server.
Can I set a size range such as 20–50 KB?
Yes. Choose Size range, enter the minimum and maximum from your form, then compress. The tool aims for the highest practical quality at or under the maximum, then shows whether the result sits inside your range. It will not pad a smaller file.
Can I use this on mobile?
Yes. Keep the original. Upload the result only on the government site that asked for it.
Does reducing file size lower quality?
JPEG compression can. This page picks the highest practical quality that still meets your maximum. Compare the preview with the original and keep a version where the face is still clear.
Is the government form photo compressor free?
Yes. No signup and no daily cap. One image at a time, up to 30MB.
